  8. LEGAL INFORMATION:

  10.     FaxMail for Windows is shareware.  This means you have a chance to
  11.     test the performance FaxMail for Windows before committing yourself
  12.     to buying it.  You have a one month legal trial.  After one month you
  13.     must pay for FaxMail for Windows or discontinue its use.
  14.  
  15.     FaxMail for Windows may be distributed freely, and no fee may be charged
  16.     for it except a nominal copying fee.  All trademarks contained herein
  17.     are registered to their respective owners.

  20. IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
  21.  
  22.     If you are currently using another Fax-Program, you will have to disable
  23.     or remove it before using FaxMail for Windows as two Fax-Programs can
  24.     not share the same Fax/Modem or run concurrently.  To disable a
  25.     Fax-Program you may have to remove one or more lines from your
  26.     AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS.  Typing rem ahead of a line in your
  27.     AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS will disable it.  The only exception is; if
  28.     you are using an Intel SatisFAXtion CAS Fax/Modem, you will not want to
  29.     remove the CAS manager.  ALL other (Class 1 and Class 2) Fax/Modems will
  30.     use the Fax-Drivers provided by FaxMail for Windows.
  31.  
  32.     Since not all of the brands and models of Fax/Modem on the market have
  33.     the same capabilities, and since the developer of FaxMail for Windows
  34.     did not have a modem of each and every model available to test
  35.     the software with, it is inevitable that some modems will not operate
  36.     properly with this software.  Models for which there were known 
  37.     compatibility problems that had not been resolved as of this release
  38.     are listed at the end of this file; if you have one of these, you
  39.     might want to try it anyway since there's a possibility that yours
  40.     might work.  The worst that can be expected to happen is that the Fax 
  41.     driver might not load or the program might hang or fail to operate, 
  42.     and perhaps your modem might be left in Fax mode and require manual 
  43.     resetting(turn it off and back on).  Since information about models
  44.     that don't work with this program will aid in correcting unsuspected
  45.     problems, we would appreciate any information you can give us about

  57.     This program modifies the WIN.INI file to add the FaxMail for Windows
  58.     Fax Driver, and it adds one or two drivers to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file,
  59.     depending on the type of Fax/Modem you have.  FaxMail for Windows also
  60.     puts the driver "FM_PN_DX.DRV" in your Windows system directory
  61.     { ?:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\FM_PN_DX.DRV }.  The Fax driver, as currently
  62.     written, does not provide a way to remove itself from memory but it
  63.     can be Disabled/Enabled.  More details are given below in the section
  64.     on HELPFUL HINTS.

  190. BEFORE INSTALLATION:
  191.  
  192. If, while installing FaxMail for Windows you find that your Fax/Modem is not
  193. listed, it is possible that one of the selections will work.  For instance,
  194. DoveFax Class 1 and Practical Peripherals Class 1 works with many other
  195. class 1 Fax/Modems.  The {"Generic, Rockwell RC96AC/RC144AC,
  196. External/Internal, Class 2"} will work with nearly all of the Fax/Modems
  197. derived from the "Rockwell Class 2 Accelerator Kit".  Generic Class 2, Zoom
  198. Class 2, ZyXEL Class 2, and Dallas Class 2 Drivers are all Class 2 Drivers.
  199. There are a lot of "Class 2" variations, so, if your "Class 2" board does
  200. not work with one, it may work with another.  The "Generic, Rockwell
  201. RC96AC/RC144AC, External/Internal, Class 2" driver is designed to do the job
  202. if all else fails.  It should not always be the first choice because even
  203. though it is more versatile, it may not perform as well as the one
  204. recommended by us.  Depending on your computer, another driver may work
  205. better than our recommended one though.
  206.  
  207. If your Fax/Modem is not listed, look for an alternate Driver.  An Internal
  208. Driver can be used to drive an External Fax/Modem, and an External Driver
  209. can be used to drive an Internal Fax/Modem.  The name is not important.  For
  210. instance, the AT&T class 1 will work on many other class 1 Fax/Modems.
  211. Choosing the wrong Driver will not harm Anything.
  212.  
  213.   The files in this package are modified to your specifications during
  214.   installation and *WILL NOT* work properly if simply copied into your 
  215.   working directory.  You *MUST* use the INSTALL.EXE or configuration 
  216.   utilities to add or change anything.
  217.  
  218. "FaxMail for Windows" and "FaxMail for DOS" are compatible with one another
  219. so you can alternate between them.  You can do a delayed send from Windows,
  220. drop to DOS and the send will take place on schedule.  You can go into
  221. "FaxMail for DOS" and watch events from its Event Monitor even though the
  222. events were initiated from Windows.  The same is true if the events were
  223. initiated with "FaxMail for DOS" and you go to Windows and use the FaxMail
  224. for Windows Event Monitor.  You can deal interactively between DOS and
  225. Windows.

  270. Go into MS-Windows 3.1 or above and run the FaxMail for Windows INSTALL.EXE
  271. using the Windows NEW command or Windows RUN command.

  274. AFTER INSTALLATION:
  275.  
  276. If you choose a full installation, you will have several icons in the
  277. FaxMail for Windows Group.  One of the icons is "Read Me" and another is
  278. "FaxMail Tutor".  These should be read before using FaxMail for Windows.
  279. There is also help buttons throughout for your convenience.
  280.  
  281. Everything is explained thoroughly in the FaxMail for Windows help system,
  282. which may be called upon from anywhere in FaxMail for Windows.
  283.  
  284. If you want to use FaxMail for Windows from within any Windows Application
  285. and/or take advantage of *ALL* the power FaxMail for Windows has, load the
  286. "Control" program that you will find in the FaxMail for Windows Group before
  287. loading any other Windows Applications.

  290. HELPFUL HINTS:

  292.                      BBS and FAX on the same computer
  293.  
  294.                             Method  - 1 -
  295. Before you call a BBS, go to the DOS Prompt, and type:
  296.

  299. Log-on to the BBS.
  300.  
  301. To resume Faxing, go to the DOS Prompt, and type:

  307. If you want to use the same computer for Fax and data-modem(BBS), it may be
  308. necessary to Disable the FaxMail for Windows Fax/Modem Drivers while calling
  309. a BBS.  To Disable FaxMail for Windows Fax/Modem Drivers run: BBS-MODE.COM.
  310. Use FAX-MODE.COM to Enable the Fax/Modem Driver again after you log-off the
  311. BBS.  Here is an example of a Batch(.BAT) File that will do it all for you.
  312. Lets say that you are using a BBS program called Telemate, and it's name is
  313. TM.EXE.  The following Batch File will Disable the "Fax/Modem Driver" load
  314. "Telemate" and when you exit the BBS program (Telemate) it will "Enable"
  315. the Fax/Modem Driver so you can resume Faxing.  At the DOS Prompt:
  316.  
  317. COPY CON T.BAT <Enter>
  318. C:\FaxMail\BBS-MODE.COM <Enter>
  319. C:\TELEMATE\TM.EXE <Enter>
  320. C:\FaxMail\FAX-MODE.COM <Control+Z(or F6)> <Enter>

  323. Using a text editor, create a file called T.BAT with the following 3 lines:

  329. The above example assumes that your FaxMail Directory is FAXMAIL and your
  330. Telemate Directory is TELEMATE.

  338. To remove FaxMail for Windows Fax/Modem Drivers, type "rem " in front of
  339. these two lines, in your AUTOEXEC.BAT:

  343.  
  344. ....and RE-BOOT.
  345.  
  346. To restore back to "FaxMail for Windows", reactivate the two lines, in your
  347. AUTOEXEC.BAT:

  352. ....and RE-BOOT.
  353.  
  354. NOTE: If your Fax/Modem is a CAS (or CAS compatible) board, such as the Intel
  355. SatisFAXtion, you might not have to remove the Drivers for data-modem(BBS)
  356. use.  If you hear the modem give a short beep tone after dialing but before
  357. the line has been answered, your modem will probably not operate properly 
  358. for data communications with the Fax drivers installed.  In some cases, to
  359. reset your modem to data mode, you may have to manually reset the modem (if
  360. it's external) or turn the PC off and then back on (for internal modems 
  361. that don't reset any other way).
  362.  
  363.  
  364. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS:
  365.  
  366.                                     - 1 -
  367. Q.  When I am booting and while my AUTOEXEC.BAT is loading I hear two BEEPs
  368.     and the Fax-Driver and Windows to CAS Interface say they are not loaded.
  369.  
  370. A.  If your Fax/Modem is turned-off or hung, or the Fax-Driver you chose is
  371.     not compatible with your Fax/Modem or computer, the Fax-Driver will
  372.     make a BEEP and fail to load.
  373.  
  374.     When the Windows to CAS Interface(FM_DS_IN.COM) is loading it checks to
  375.     be sure that the Fax-Driver is properly loaded.  If the Fax-Driver is
  376.     not properly loaded, Windows to CAS Interface will make a BEEP and
  377.     also fail to load.
  378.

  380. Q.  FaxMail for Windows does not run or does not run properly.
  381.  
  382. A.  If you are currently using another Fax-Program, you will have to disable
  383.     or remove it before using FaxMail for Windows as two Fax-Programs can

  387. Q.  None of the Fax-Driers work.
  388.  
  389. A.  Be sure you have the latest Version.  FaxMail for Windows is being
  390.     updated continuously.  We may have a new Fax-Driers that will work for
  391.     you.  As of the time this was written there had been 16 revisions,
  392.     Versions V1.00 (FAX-V100.ZIP) to V1.17 (FAX-V117.ZIP).

  395. Q.  I set the sound/volume/retries but my Fax/Modem ignores my changes.
  396.  
  397. A.  (a) The DoveFax and some other Fax/Modem do not support volume and
  398.         speaker manipulation.
  399.  
  400.     (b) If you have a CAS Fax/Modem you will have to use their SETUP program
  401.         to set sound/volume/retries.
  402.

  404. Q.  I did the INSTALL.EXE and re-booted, but no Fax-Driver(s) even attempted
  405.     to load from my AUTOEXEC.BAT.
  406.  
  407. A.  FaxMail for Windows put one or two Fax-Driver(s) in your AUTOEXEC.BAT.
  408.     Look in your AUTOEXEC.BAT and see if you have a menu or jump command
  409.     ahead of the Fax-Driver(s).  If so, move the Fax-Driver(s) to a place
  410.     in your AUTOEXEC.BAT where they will load, preferably, first.  The
  411.     Fax-Driver(s) look something like this:
  412.

  415.

  417. Q.  I removed or commented the Fax-Driver(s) from my AUTOEXEC.BAT and now
  418.     when I try to run ant Windows program that has a print-routine in it, I
  419.     get a message saying:

  432. A.  If you had a power failure while in Windows or you crashed out of Windows
  433.     while FaxMail for Windows was active, your Default-Printer-Driver may
  434.     have been replaced with the FaxMail for Windows Fax-converter
  435.     ("Print-to-FaxFile on LPT1").
  436.  
  437. Solution:
  438.     Close the FaxMail for Windows "Control" Program.  Load the Windows
  439.     Control Panel and select Printers and choose the Printer-Driver that you
  440.     want as your Default-Printer-Driver.
  441.  
  442. Note:
  443.     When you have the FaxMail for Windows Control loaded and the PRINTER OR
  444.     FAX TOGGLE is toggled to FAX, Windows swaps from your Default-Printer-
  445.     Driver to "Print-to-FaxFile on LPT1".  When you toggle back to PRINTER
  446.     or exit Windows, Windows swaps back to your Default-Printer-Driver.  If
  447.     you crash out of Windows, Windows does not get a chance to swap back, so
  448.     the next time you enter Windows it thinks that "Print-to-FaxFile on
  449.     LPT1" is your Default-Printer-Driver and when FaxMail for Windows makes
  450.     it's swap it swaps "Print-to-FaxFile on LPT1" for "Print-to-FaxFile on
  451.     LPT1".
  452.  
  453.  
  454. MODEMS WITH KNOWN INCOMPATIBILITIES:
  455.  
  456.     - unknown -    Please let me know if FaxMail for Windows does
  457.                    not work properly with your Fax/Modem.
  458.  
  459.

  462.     No warranty is provided to anyone who has not contributed for this
  463.     program.  ElectraSoft specifically disclaims all other warranties,
  464.     expressed or implied, including but not limited to, implied warranties
  465.     of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose with respect to
  466.     defects in the disk or documentation, and the program license granted
  467.     herein.  In no event shall ElectraSoft be liable for any loss of profit
